PDF: Nintendo Power #3 – Nov-Dec 1988. This week I am featuring the third issue of Nintendo Power (November-December 1988). The cover story features Track and Field II and its 16 different “mini-games”. In hindsight, you can see what Nintendo really wanted to do with its track and field games, but is just now able to pull it off with the Wii. Nintendo unboxes new Switch Lite color, proving whether or not it's blue or purple. There's a new Nintendo Switch Lite color scheme releasing this month, but the actual color itself has been debated as of late. Branded as blue, the Switch Lite has. As stated in the title, I am looking for the old guide that Nintendo Power put out for this game. It spanned for 2 or 3 issues. It was really cool with great artwork. I found a NP magazine collection on.pdf but the quality was really poor. Everybody got a real kick out of the first issue of Nintendo Power, so this week I figured I should get around to highlighting the second issue of the Nintendo Fanboy Mag.
Bionic Commando is one of the primary NES games that has held up well over the years and has not really been replicated in newer generations. On page 6 (by the mags’ page #s), you will find a well-rounded guide to maximizing your gameplay and technique while playing throught the classic action platformer. (on Page 43 you will find a full poster for Bionic Commando as well)
Page 24 begins the cover story: a complete guide to Castlevania 2: Simons Quest. I features a wide array of tips, strategies, and maps. Additional guides and features are included for games such as Super Mario Bros. 2, R.C. Pro-Am, and Blaster Master.
The NES Journal feauture had some interesting tidbits. First of all, on page 92, the Power Pad is introduced and on page 93, Nintendo Power has an interview with Chris and Tim Stamper for Rare Ltd. Back in 1989, Rare was primarily known for games such as R.C. Pro-AM Racing and JetPac, but as many of you know, they later when on to make titles such as Battletoads, Donkey Kong Country, 007 Goldeneye, and Perfect Dark. The wasn’t a lot of info in the interview, but it was still interesting to see such an early feature on Rare.

If you thought you were excited when you saw the first Issues of Nintendo Power and Playstation Magazine posted in PDF form, you are going to really start drooling when you log into RetroMags.
The incredible team of scanners is dedicated to scanning a number of classic gaming magazines and releasing them in mass quantities. In fact, they actually have a COMPLETE set of Nintendo Power issues. My only complaint is that I can’t really figure out how to access their archive other than via torrents on third-party sites.

I actually learned about this site because of some negligence of mine. When I got a lot of visitors for the first Nintendo Power issue, the Admin from RetroMags was quick to point out the scan originated from their site. I didn’t realize this as I had originally downloaded it from my favorite download spot, Underground Gamer, and hadn’t looked into the origin. (Shame on me)
In the meantime, we’ve all gotten things straightened out and I hope to team up with RetroMags to add to their archive and help promote the scans in continuing weekly feature.
While you are free to download hundreds of issues right now, I plan on highlighting one issue at a time each week in order to enjoy the small details, like this one from the first Nintendo Power issue.
Currently RetroMags is focusing on rounding out the earlier issues of Playstation Magazine, but due to the focus of my personal collection and those of other racketboy.com members, we will be focusing on Sega-related magazines such as Sega Visions, Official Dreamcast Magazine, and some of the Saturn-related magazines from the UK. I think these contributions will greatly complement the existing scans at RetroMags.
