Workbench 1.3
Then I restarted and booted Workbench 1.3 using the custom Kickstart 1.3+SCSI image under WinUAE and Initialized the HD from the menus. After that, I copied the WB1.3 disk (copy df0: dh0: ALL CLONE). A restart without floppy under WinUAE got me into Workbench 1.3 just fine!!!
Workbench 1.3, released in 1988 along with Kickstart 1.3, had a large number of changes over Workbench 1.2
There were a few revisions of Workbench 1.3, with the last official release being Workbench 1.3.4, the last of the official version 1 Workbench versions before System 2 (Kickstart 2 and Workbench 2), although there were alpha and beta versions of Workbench 1.4 and Kickstart 1.4.
Visually, while Workbench 1.3 retained the same default colours as the previous versions of Workbench, the first thing that is obvious is that the icons have been redrawn, with many of them having a pseudo 3 dimensional look to them. Most icons now also have an alternative image when they’re selected, instead of just inverting the colours used. The drawer icons show an open drawer when they’re selected, and Trashcan icon has it’s lid open when it’s selected. It all looks much nicer when compared to the look of the default Workbench 1.2 icons. Also, the floppy disk icons now look much more like actual floppy disks, with the distinctive Amiga rainbow tick (but as Workbench only displayed in 4 colours at this point, it wasn’t in the rainbow colours) on the disk label for the Workbench and Extras disk icons.

The Prefs icon changed to that of a drawer, as now there were separate icons for several pages of the Preferences editor, such as the mouse pointer editor, and the preferences for the printer. Also the ability to copy the preferences to a different disk was added.

What is Workbench?
Workbench (or Amiga Workbench)(recently renamed Amiga OS for version 3.5 and newer), is the operating system software used by the Amiga range of computers.Some of the operating system is built in to the ROM (known as the Kickstart ROM) and some of it is on floppy disk (or CD for later versions).There were lots of different versions, some of which were quite basic and did very little (like 1.0), but all stuck to a similar design. Newer versions are backwardly compatible with older software, but poorly written software may fail on some later version due to software developers not sticking to the Workbench guidelines and coding directly to the system.Workbench can be run from floppy disks or installed to hard drive, either manually or by using the scripts and programs on the install disks.

Alpha and Beta versions
Commodore had an odd policy on Alphas and Betas. Although not for public release, developers could get these quite easily, and sometimes these beta versions ended up on hardware tucked away somewhere. Examples of this are the 0.7/0.9 files hidden away on the A1000 kickstart disks (usually hidden on 1.0 and 1.1 disks) and the 1.4 Alpha ROM on the A3000.
