Merging And Splitting Cells Keynote 2

It would be great if you could right click and split a cell into two at some point. Similarly, being able to control-click to pick adjacent cells of the same type and then have some way of merging them would be useful.

Merging cells in Excel is easy, and can make your spreadsheet much more functional (and aesthetically pleasing).

  1. To merge cells, select the cells that you want to merge, right-click, and then select Cell Merge Cells. To split a cell, right-click the cell, and then select Cell Split Cells. Specify the number of cells in which to split the current cell and click OK.
  2. Merging Or Splitting Cells Combining multiple cells (two or more) that are in the same row and/or in the same column to a single cell is known as merging cells. Separating the cells that are merged is known as splitting cells. Steps to merge cells – First method.

To merge cells, follow along with the video above, or:

Merging And Splitting Cells Keynote 2
  1. Select two or more adjacent cells to merge.
  2. From the Home tab, click Merge & Center.
  3. The cells will be merged into a single cell and only the data in the upper left cell will be retained. At this point, you may also want to change the alignment of the cells, which you can also do from the Home tab.

To un-merge or split merged cells, simply select the merged cell and click Merge & Center again.

Notes:

  • You cannot merge cells that are inside an Excel table.
  • If the Merge & Center button is unavailable, the cells may be in Edit mode. To cancel Edit mode, press your Enter key.
  • Formula references in other cells will be adjusted to use the cell reference of the merged cell.
  • You cannot sort a range of data that includes merged cells as well as unmerged cells, because sorting requires all cells to be the same size.

It is generally a good rule to execute merging and splitting of cells at the end of the layout formatting. This is because some operations such as deleting a column or a row may produce a result difficult to predict when applied to a table with merged or split cells.
