Formula 1 2020 – The championship under the influence of the COVID 19
Finally, Formula 1 2020 is back! Want to know what has changed due to the pandemic and keep yourself updated about the race? Keep on reading!
Known as the most prestigious competition for open-wheel racing cars, Formula 1 is celebrating its 70th anniversary from the first season (1950).
However, it has not been a great season so far due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many other championships, Formula 1 2020 has been going through a tough time of interruptions and postponements.
Yet, thanks to a joint effort from the race’s organizers and the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile), F1 2020 is now able to continue its journey.
Changes due to the COVID-19 Pandemic
New calendar
This is the most conspicuous change in this F1 season. Originally planned to take place in March, the championship was postponed for nearly 4 months and has just had its restart round held at the beginning of July.
This leads to massive changes in other factors, including the weather. For example, in Spain’s round, which has been moved from May to August, the race is expected to experience considerably hotter weather.
Also, that there are still uncertainties upon which races will take place has created frustrations among not only drivers and constructors, but also audiences. This undoubtedly would have some effects on the outcome of the championship, too.
Teams and drivers
In a number of teams, various financial problems caused by the pandemic have brought about some upheavals in their staff.
While Williams is calling for fresh investment, McLaren has laid off thousands of their staff. Also, Toro Rosso was renamed “Scuderia Alpha Tauri”, which is after Red Bull’s fashion brand.
On the other hand, during four months of postponement, there have been changes in the drivers’ contracts. To be specific, three drivers Sebastian Vettel, Carlos Sainz Jnr will leave their current team next season.
Sporting regulation adjustments
The main change about F1 sporting regulation deals with FIA Super Licence points, which can now be obtained by doing free practice sessions. For each 100 km during a free practice session, the driver will receive a point. Each year, a maximum of 10 Super Licence points can be obtained by this method.
Will there be spectators?
No and yes. There is no fixed answer to the question, as F1 claims that it depends closely on the global situation of the pandemic. If the pandemic is controlled before the last race in December, fans can hope for a round with spectators, whose number will surely be limited.
However, this July, there is every likelihood that we will all have to watch the restart round in front of a small screen.
It is true that Formula 1 2020 will be one of the weirdest F1 seasons in history: interrupted calendar, multiple canceled rounds, barely any spectators, etc.
Only because of the tremendous effort from the championship’s organizers, teams and drivers can have this F1 season aired again. However, it is promised that against all the odds, the championship will stay heated for all the fans!
